Organization Description

The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) is the national leader in providing professional development in reading instruction utilizing the Orton-Gillingham approach. Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Southeast Michigan, IMSE has trained more than 260,000 teachers in more than 5,000 school districts in 47 states throughout the United States. As the pioneer of delivering face-to-face Orton Gillingham methodology and training to general education teachers, as well as teachers instructing students in Tiers 2 and 3 of RTI, IMSE’s instructors have helped to make millions of new readers. IMSE’s face-to-face courses are taught both in person and virtually.

IMSE has over 50 Master Instructors, all of whom are educators with a minimum of a master’s degree and certified through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction. Additionally, they are certified in IMSE’s Orton-Gillingham methodology. They have taught Orton-Gillingham in the classroom and understand the complexities of differentiating and integrating Orton-Gillingham into any setting.

IMSE’s two 30-hour training courses, IMSE’s Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham and IMSE’s Intermediate Orton-Gillingham, are designed for K-5 general education teachers, K-12 special education teachers, K-12 interventionists, K-12 tutors, literacy coaches, ELL teachers, and paraeducators. Both courses are accredited by the International Dyslexia Association. IMSE also offers an extensive support system to provide teachers with tools and resources to continue mastering the art of teaching children to read after returning to the classroom. Teachers receive OG Weekly, an electronic weekly newsletter that follows up to review or provide additional information regarding training content, for one year following training. In addition, participants can join IMSE’s Facebook groups, online communities in which questions are answered, ideas are shared, and free resources are provided. (IMSE’s public Facebook group can be accessed here: https://www.facebook.com/Orton-Gillingham-358905134128313/. An IMSE Alumni Group may be joined by request following completion of training.) IMSE provides Padlets with links to valuable resources to increase teacher knowledge and provide instructional ideas. Participants also have the option to purchase coaching sessions with IMSE trainers. Teachers can utilize Interactive Orton-Gillingham (IOG), an online lesson-planning tool to help differentiate instruction that includes an assessment system to track growth and achievement. IMSE also has a series of workbooks and decodable readers for classroom implementation. Customizable slides and online resources are available as well.
